Hydrocyclones for Drilling mud System

A hydrocyclone is a classifier that has two exits on the axis: the smaller on the bottom (underflow or reject) and a larger at the top (overflow or accept). The underflow is generally the denser or coarser fraction, while the overflow is the lighter or finer fraction. The characteristics of the feed stream includes-size distribution of solids in the feed stream, pulp density (percent solids in the slurry), pulp viscosity and the inlet pressure.

A hydrocyclone is most often used to separate "heavies" from a liquid mixture originating at a centrifugal pump or some other continuous source of pressurized liquid. A hydrocyclone is most likely to be the right choice for processes where "lights" are the greater part of the mixture and where the "heavies" settle fairly easily.Generally, hydrocyclones are used in continuous flow systems so that the instantaneous liquid inflow to the hydrocyclone is equal to the total instantaneous outflow of "lights" plus "heavies". In cases where "heavies" are a very small part of the whole liquid, it is sometimes advantageous to accumulate them in the bottom of the hydrocyclone for batchwise removal.

Mostly, in drilling mud system, it is a typical solids removal device, in which the hydrocyclones are designed into sepeical equipment named drilling mud desilter,desander or mud cleaner, a combined high effective solids-removal equipment including desilter, desander and shale shaker screens.

More speicfically,drilling mud desander is used as the 2nd stage of solids control for drilling mud, which makes separations between 45 and 74 μm.It blessed with the following features:

However,high effective mud cleaner is the second or third stage separation equipment of drilling liquid, which will handle the solids particle after being treated by the first grade separation equipment. The mud will be recovered and cuttings which are bigger than mud will be removed. Then the cuttings in the underflow will flow into circulation tanks through the screens when the weighted mud passes while the particles that are bigger than mesh will be removed.
