Most domestic oilfields usually solidify and manage the drilling fluids in the mud pits after drilling works. That is, to have the left 2/3 sludge solidified by solidification agents with the water less than 1/3 of all released after the mud settles to clear water and sludge out of gravity. However, it costs a great deal on much chemical agent consumption to deal with excess water content in the mud, and it is not quite effective to completely eliminate hidden pollutions.

In response to governments' regulations on environmental protection, domestic onshore oilfields are shifting their focus to harmless treatment of used drilling mud, initiating application of the technology centering on solid-fluid separation. It transforms previous simple solidification method to an integrated one of chemical method, solid-liquid separation and solidification.

Solid-liquid separation is vital for managing waste drilling fluids. More water removed means less solids remained and less money taken for the management, thus bringing the expenses down and the economic benefits up. In recent years, China has seen continuous successes in developing orifice filter press, perforated drainage conveyor, drilling centrifuge, etc. and great processes made in waste treatment technology.
